How should an Orthodox Christian view philosophy and scholasticism?

Philosophy does not feed the soul, but it entertains the mind. That's all it does. And that is not the real philosophy. The real philosophy is asceticism, the ascetical living of the saints and the lives of the saints. I don't get into a lot of scholasticism because of the fact that the faith has to be lived. And I'll give you an example, and I recommend reading this, from Saint Sophrony of Essex. There's a book called I Knew a Man in Christ. It's kind of a biography of Saint Sophrony. It's very excellent, highly recommended. But Saint Sophrony, he says very clearly, listen, just because someone knows or can talk about the uncreated light, that doesn't mean that they've experienced the uncreated light. They're just parroting the words. Like a parrot, they're just repeating what they've read before. The real theology of the faith is those who have lived the theology. That's why they say, he who prays is a theologian, and he who prays truly is truly a theologian. So the real philosophy is in life and experience of God. It's not in academic writings or overly thinking things. So for me, being a former philosophy major, I just am not interested in that stuff. I see it as a lot of mental gymnastics. People get excited about all these ideas and ways of thinking about things and whatever. I'm just not attracted to it. I want to be attracted and in love with Jesus Christ. I want to read the saints about prayer and living the faith and asceticism and subjugating the ego. That real life, that is the real philosophy. That is what I am in love with, because I want to be in love with Christ. I don't love him like I should, and he loves me so much. I don't love him like I should. The real philosophy is loving Christ and emptying ourselves. And that is a lived experience. That is not to be found in reading academic books.
