Why do I keep blaming my wife for what is wrong in my marriage?
So many times I see this when I sit down with a couple today and I say, what's going on in your marriage and what's happening? And the husband says, well, she's doing this. The first thing out of his mouth. And I'm like, man, we're right back in the Garden of Eden. It's not me, it's the woman that you gave me. It's not my fault as the head of the family, it's the fact that she's not listening to me, or she's doing this, or whatever else. Men have this innate sense to buck responsibility and to blame other people. It's one of the downfalls of really truly toxic masculinity, to blame other people and not take responsibility for yourself and for your own actions, and to take the burden of responsibility and place it on yourself, walking forward in faith and trusting God that he will guide and direct you to actually rectify the situation. And so it is that the real toxic masculinity today are those who are seeking after pleasure and selfishness, self-centeredness, blaming feminism in the culture, blaming everybody else, and not taking responsibility for their own life. The violent, as Christ says, are those who take upon the responsibility of self-denial, the ascetical life. This is the main sin in the Garden of Eden, which is blaming other people for what you should take responsibility for. In fact, the holy fathers say that if Adam had repented, they would have stayed in the garden.
