Why does buying things never actually make me feel complete?

This is what advertisement does. A lot of times on television what they'll do is they'll show somebody unhappy or discontent, or the family is bored or whatever, and you think, oh, my family suffers from boredom or something. And then they show you the product, and then they show you the family with the product, or the person with the product, and what happens? Now they're happy and fulfilled. So they show you you have a need. That's essentially all advertising. You have a need, you don't feel complete, this product will complete you, and now, after you own this product, the final stage is you will feel full, deified. You will feel how you're supposed to feel in life. Which man craves the Holy Spirit. Christian or not, we all desire the depths of the Holy Spirit. We all have a sense of the fact that we don't feel whole, we don't feel complete in life. Many times we don't feel at peace. We're struggling with the events of the day, the stressors, all these different things. And this is what advertisement does. It takes all these things and it says, if you possess these things, then you will be complete. And what do we have? We have the holy icons. And the great irony is, in the icons, what do we see? We don't have icons where the saint is standing in front of their Mercedes-Benz, or their mansion is behind them in the icon, or where they have their cell phone open and they're showing you their stock portfolio and they're like, this is it, I'm complete now, I've acquired all these things, this is the real me. You don't see any of that in icons. And we don't really read about any of that in the lives of the saints. In fact the people that we see depicted in the icons are often poor, extremely poor, suffering persecution, rejected by society, truly rejected by society, persecuted, tortured, and obviously many times they've been martyred, which is to say they've been murdered. And yet we see in all of the icons the glory of God resting on the saint. We see that they are peaceful and tranquil, and they are not bound to the things of this world.
