Why doesn't God give me the happy life he promised?

When we think about the Incarnation and all that has come to pass, the Incarnation did not come so that God could give us a perfect world, or a happy life to live in. This is a very Western understanding of the gospel, as if Christ came so that we would be healthy, wealthy and wise, and that all of our days would go untroubled. This has nothing to do with Christ, the life that he lived, the life of the apostles, the lives of the saints. All of the saints since the time of Christ have suffered destitution, rejection, poverty, hunger, all of these things, in order to acquire the heavenly kingdom. Our goal is to move from this mindset of trying to make heaven on earth, to understanding that it is inevitably heaven which dwells within us. We are not trying to just get there, but we are trying to bring the kingdom of God to dwell within us.
