Why won't Orthodox Christians say that they are saved?

One of the questions that comes up a lot as people from the West are encountering Eastern Orthodoxy, continually, is our view of salvation and who will be saved. And oftentimes people will come and they'll say, "You know, Father, am I saved? Are Protestants saved? Are Catholics saved?" And I think many times they're confounded by the response of Orthodox Christians, which is that we continually use the words, basically, that we hope to be saved. We as Orthodox hope to be saved. We do not take the stance that we are saved, and we don't speak declaratively about what is going to happen with God's judgment and how that judgment is going to affect us. We don't take into our own hands the judgment of God and begin to declare things that are, you could kind of use that saying, above our pay grade. Because we don't know who will be saved. Only God knows this, and in his mercy God chooses who he is going to save.
