Supplements

For close to half the year the Church has us living as vegans. I do not go looking for exemptions and I do not cut corners. This is what I actually use to train hard through a fast, in the order I take it.

How the day runs

Move across the day to see what I take, and when.

On wakingBefore bed

On waking

Two scoops of creatine, 10 grams, before anything else. If I leave it for later I will forget.

Number one

Micronized Creatine Monohydrate

The single most important supplement I take. Micronized only means it dissolves better. Two scoops, 10 grams, first thing when I wake up, because if I leave it for later I will forget. Women and men who do not lift can do 5 grams. If you are a man and you lift, take 10. It is an absolute game changer during the fast.

Micro Factor

Vitamins every day, always with the first meal. These packs beat having ten different jars on the counter and you can throw one in a bag. Omega 3s and vitamin D, which almost everybody is low in. Six kids and a parish means convenience is not a luxury for me.

Vegan Power Pro

Half the year we live as vegans, and this is how I still get 200 grams of protein a day at 235 pounds. Two to three scoops, straight water. No blender, no almond milk, no banana. I drink it several times a day and it gets me 100 to 150 grams on its own. Boring and repetitive, and it works.

Megawatt

A little pre workout on the evenings I train. I do not go crazy with it, because I lift late and I still have to sleep.

Phorm Energy

I drink one pretty much every day. Somebody is going to tell you that is not healthy. That is alright. I work and sweat hard enough that it does not have to be perfect. I love energy drinks and I am going to keep drinking them.

Electrolyte Freezer Pops

An hour into a session, when the garage is 95 degrees. They bring your core temperature down and they are salty and refreshing. Call it a crutch if you want. A crutch that gets you through the whole workout is worth having.

Ignition

The thing that will crash your workout is not a lack of protein, it is a lack of carbs. I train two hours at night. Electrolytes through the first hour, then I switch to this. It gives me something with flavor to drink and it makes the second hour a lot more manageable.

Magnesium

The last thing in the day. Magnesium before bed gives you much better sleep, and everything here runs on a schedule.

Talk to your spiritual father about this one. Whey isolate has the lactose removed. It is a dairy derivative, yes, and it is also not remotely the same thing as a cheese pizza. Nobody leaps for joy over a scoop of whey isolate. I do not believe it deviates from the spirit of the fast, but that call belongs to your priest and not to a website. It is here for men who find that pea protein does not sit right with them.

Level-1 Bar

For traveling, and for the kids. My three oldest boys are 10, 12, and 14 and they are embracing the life of fasting. A bar with whey in it is not the same thing as a cup of ice cream. The Strawberry Shortcake is probably the single best bar I have ever had.

None of this changes a man on its own. What changes him is other men who will not let him quit. There are more than 600 of them inside the Brotherhood, and I am live with them four times a month.
