The Passions

Can I trust my own heart when I make a big decision?

Last but not least, as we are making progress and developing, we want to strive for a pure heart. What is a pure heart? A pure heart that is free from self-love, from egotism, from pride, from the passions, from lustfulness, from greed. We want to develop this pure heart because we're going to have to make decisions that align with our heart. Now, it's not good to make decisions aligned with your heart if your heart is corrupted. But as your heart becomes purified in the process of being sanctified, or what we call deification, and I am growing more into the image and likeness of Christ with the guidance of my spiritual father, the love of those around me, I can trust that I need to listen to my heart. But that also means that it's not going to jive with everybody. Everyone's not going to accept that. Everyone's not going to even understand that. You know the wisdom of God is foolishness to the world. So why, if somebody says, Father, you gave up this amount of money at this job, or doing this, or you could have made this, or you did this, why are you doing this? It's not about what they think. It's about following my heart, and my heart is to serve Christ. And that means I can't serve the world. What I don't want to rely on is limited or broken logic. I don't want to reside in my head. It doesn't mean that logic is bad, it just means that logic has its limitations. So many people make decisions based on logic, or they think that they do, but a lot of times it's just their corrupted heart. We need to purify our heart as men, and focus on purifying that heart, and then listening to what is in tune with our heart. Where we want to go, what we want to do, what we want to accomplish, how we can love people best. Is it going to make sense all the time? No, it can't. We're living a transcendent life for eternity in the temporal world, where everyone else is living for the temporal world. So of course it's going to be otherworldly. Of course it's going to be strange, even. But we do all of this because we are pursuing Jesus Christ. We are made in his image and we grow into his likeness. The image of God in each one of us, brothers, is our unique personality. We have to conquer the passions within us. We need to embrace who we are as God's image, and we need to fight through these insecurities about what other people think, or even sometimes what we think about ourselves, and attain to the pure version of who God made us to be. I am not trying to be like anybody else, and you should not be trying to be anyone else. You are made just the way that God intended you to be, and your goal is to embody and embrace that to the fullest degree that you are able to, because you cannot become a saint being someone else. You can only become a saint being your true self.
