Is being on my phone all day actually doing something to my soul?
Technology is not neutral. It is not nothing. I cannot say that it is evil per se, because most things in this world depend largely on how you use them. So an example would be, you want to spend some time with your family, you put on a movie. It is the right use of it at the right time in the right environment. You watch a movie, it is a bonding time, you all laugh, you all cry together. It is a good experience. That is normal. What is abnormal is somebody binge watching Netflix till like three in the morning and then having to get up and go to work. And that watching and being checked out and being unfocused becomes like a way of life, where their whole disposition is detached from being attentive. It is one of the hallmarks of prayer that it requires so much attention. It requires focus. And our whole mentality today in our culture, with the internet, with work, all of these things, is built on the idea of being scattered and being distracted and being somewhere else. When you are sitting there looking at your phone, you are not just looking at your phone, but you are going someplace. You are somewhere else. Everything around you kind of blurs and kind of fades into the background. It is a way that it kind of cultivates not just our mind, because man is psychosomatic, I speak about this all the time, he is soul and body. That does not just cultivate our mind, or capture our mind, or capture our brain. It captures our intelligence, it captures the very focus of our souls.
