What should I look for in a local Orthodox church?

Really what you want to look for is that it's a parish that holds the tradition of the church, that it is not modernized. So it should have a modest dress code. It should have head coverings for the women. The clergy should be serious, sober-minded people. I think that being received by holy baptism is absolutely an imperative. I would emphasize that. I tended to encourage people to go to Russian Orthodox churches and Serbian churches. They're very traditional. A lot of Romanian parishes are also very traditional. But I would fundamentally look for a priest who is aligned with the teaching of the church, the teaching of the saints, the tradition of the church. That doesn't mean that they will be Protestant-like. So they may not be overly charismatic in the way that people are used to finding pastors. They may not be, how do you want to put it, kind of that showman, counselor, empathetic, sometimes not very serious, happy type of person. That is not a prerequisite for becoming a priest. Ideally you have a priest who is serious, sober-minded, may seem a little tough, but that's okay. It's not out of toughness, it's out of love. So those are the things that I would look for. A traditional parish that follows the traditional teaching of the church, that has frequent services, that is very prayerful.
