What's the difference between venerating a saint and worshipping one?

Veneration is more like love and honor and respect. Somebody said, do you venerate your wife? I would say, well, in a sense, yes, of course I venerate her. I hold her in the highest regard. I love her. I adore her. I am devoted to her with my whole life. But if somebody said, do you worship her? I'd say, absolutely not. Worship alone is for God. Veneration has to do with the intimate relationship that we have with people. And in the particular case of the saints, we know, as St. Paul says, all are alive in Christ. The saints are not dead. The Mother of God is not dead. They're alive in Christ. So we can form and have this relationship with them, because they are attentive to the needs that we have in our life. And practical experience has shown over two thousand years in church history that saints intervene. They do things. They answer prayers. They show up. We have countless examples of physical manifestation of saints that have appeared to people and helped or healed or answered prayers or did all kinds of things. So the saints are very much alive and with us.
