Why can't I think my way out of my own head?

One of the hallmarks that I hear from people when they come to talk to me about their thinking is they have thoughts where there's no answer. So no matter how they try to answer the question, what if my childhood was different, there's no way to picture an answer, there's no way to come to a conclusion. It becomes befuddling when you're trying to reason with your own thoughts. And particularly because a lot of our thoughts are not our own. We are having this dialectic with the demons, and they're the masters of keeping this conversation going. They're like that person at the party who won't let you stop talking to them, and every time you signal that you want to end the conversation they have one more thing to say and they just keep sucking you back in. So when people are trying to diagnose and figure out their thoughts, it's like they're using their mind that's already kind of broken, subject to the fall, and they're trying to use their logic, which is also fallen and finite. Logic is not perfect. It's not the perfect guide. In fact, you can present perfect answers to yourself and yet you won't find any peace. It's that great mystery, that in our society today that's hyper influenced by psychology, there's this idea that just getting our thoughts out and talking about our thoughts and looking at our thoughts and exploring our thoughts is somehow going to bring us to a destination. And yet we end up just walking in the forest in a giant circle. And we never get out of the thoughts, because the thoughts are always changing and shifting. And if we're distrustful, then all the thoughts are distrustful. And then we start to think, oh, that's right, everything is suspicion. We begin to see things very black and white.
