Why did some people love Christ on sight and others hate him?

What is the uncreated light? Well, we reference the uncreated light by the things that we know from other biblical accounts. Our first example of this is probably Moses on Mount Sinai, that when he came down the glory of the Lord, the light, was resting upon his face, to the degree that it was so unsettling for the people that they asked him to put a bag over his head, because they could not handle this light. We talk about this light that emanates from God. It is not his essence. The essence of God is only knowable by God himself. But this energy, this light that comes out from God, is divine, and yet it is not his essence. So we experience this divine light, this divine energy from God. Where else do we see this in scripture? Well, of course we see it on Mount Tabor, when Christ is transfigured before the apostles. It says he becomes all light. And in St Gregory Palamas's most excellent homily, probably the best homily on the Transfiguration, he says it's not that Christ is transfigured and becomes all light. It's that the veil over the eyes of the apostles is lifted, and they see Christ as he really is. Christ was always walking around beaming out this immaterial light at all times, but the people's eyes were darkened and they could not see it. This is why, in fact, some people encountered Christ and had great hatred and revulsion. We read that today in the gospel reading, that they were angry with him that he was forgiving sins, and yet at the same time we read in almost every gospel story that someone is attracted to Christ. That is the power of this light. For those who are ready to encounter the light, it is warmth, it is gentleness, it is love, it is comfort, it is rest. For those who are unprepared to encounter this light, who have hardened their heart towards God, what do we say about it? We say it is unbearable. It's burning. It's searing. It's discomfort. It's the rejection that they have in their heart being illumined through this light.
