Why does physical work clear my head?
Number one health point, both for the monastic and for the married man, is the fact that mentally, work is good for men. Being physical and having your hands doing something, whatever that may be, gives you a mental relief. When I go into the gym at night I try not to answer any text messages, check emails, do any work. I want it to be a time where I'm basically not turning off my mind, but putting all of the cares in life kind of on the back shelf. I'm focusing on something to do that is productive and healthy and good for me, but I'm not stressing about everything else that's going on. And that's really it. Physicality helps us to work out the emotions and the energy that kind of gets stored inside of us, and helps us to process life in a way where we can decompress by doing something that actually alleviates the stress and the strain that is on our mind. And then secondarily, there's a physical aspect of it. Now, I get lots of comments about my physical well-being, because I think people think I'm wearing a cassock and therefore I'm overweight. I'm sub 20 percent body fat, I have 125 over 75 blood pressure and I have great blood work, so don't stress that I'm not taking care of my body. I certainly don't look like a normal 44 year old man. I'm in very good shape. But the physicality part is also a key component, because I notice men are workers. We have dogs and we say, this dog is a working dog. And so many times the dogs will eat the furniture when they're just not getting enough work. And I think the same thing is true for men. They kind of stir and go restless and start to spin when they're not actually engaging their body. They need to have that mind muscle connection. They need to be enjoying what God has given them. So many times I've been lifting or rock climbing and I'm like, this is fun. It's just enjoyable. One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was just go and spend a whole afternoon out in the forest climbing boulders and just being in nature and soaking it in and having something to do. I don't want to go and sit at the beach and look at the ocean. That's not fun. I want to get in. I want to body surf. I want to be in the waves. I want to feel it crashing on me. Men are very much inclined to doing something as opposed to just sitting and not doing anything. And this is the physicality that God has given us. And so we need to work it and stretch it and utilize it for our benefit.
