How do I raise my kids in the faith?

The Orthodox Church has historically done a few things. Number one is we've kept our children in all the services. They participate in the body and blood of Christ. Even as infants, we continually nourish them on these things. We have a family life where we call the family the small church. So we have morning and evening prayers with our children. We have devotionals. We read them the lives of the saints. Basically, we immerse them in the life of faith that every adult would do, except to a smaller degree, that is what they can handle as children. You can't have children at home doing a forty-five minute prayer service. It's not going to happen. But are you going to spend five to ten minutes every night before they go to bed reciting the prayers? Of course. Are we going to take them to church with us? Are they going to be in church with us? Of course. Are they going to start confessing when they're seven years old? Yes. Are they going to start to fast to some degree at seven? Yes. All of that is participatory. Faith is not an idea. Faith is something that you live and breathe and experience. And of course, we want our children to be participators in that.
