How does the devil know exactly how to tempt me?

He describes the devil as a master psychologist who has been studying and interacting with mankind since the beginning — he has logged more hours in this battle than anyone, and through the horde of demons he commands he knows each person's triggers, buttons, and thought patterns, with particular demons specializing in particular passions such as greed. Everything the devil does carries the fingerprint of egotism, pride, and vainglory, because his fall came from refusing, out of self-love, to serve mankind. He is bound by certain laws — he cannot be humble and cannot stand the sign of the cross — but he is not bound to play fair.
