Manhood
Should I tone myself down so I fit in better?
We look at our life oftentimes as if we are made up of a series of dials, and these dials can be flipped from one side to the other. And so I wrote on here three points that I really struggled with in my 20s, developing into manhood, in terms of who I was, and why I struggled with them was primarily the people that I was surrounding myself with. Number one was introvert versus extrovert. I'm not just an extrovert, but I'm highly extroverted, and I was hanging out with people who were more introverted, and my extroversion seemed extra loud in the face of their introversion. And so I thought to myself, man, if I could just switch more of my extroversion into introversion, I would fit in better with other people. Quiet versus a talker. Obviously, if you're watching this channel, I'm a talker. That's just reality. But a secret kind of part of every person who's extroverted or overly talkative is you think, wow, if I could just tune it back, if I could just turn the knob to quiet, if I could just turn off the thoughts that constantly flow out of my mouth, then it would be more palatable for the people around me. And last, intense versus mellow. For me personally, I had some very mellow friends, and my intensity was very intense, and that intensity was too much for some people. Now, the number one thing that happened that began to shift my focus on this was I came in contact with a great mentor, an older figure who was more mature, more stable, and began to impress on me, you are God's son. Just the way that you were created cannot be duplicated. And it's not for anybody else to be you, and it's not for you to be anyone else. You are created exactly the way that God knits you together. That is so core. It is not dials that you can shift and change to make people like you. It is a core facet of being created in the image of God. And notice, funny enough, I'm doing this course, you see all these qualities, and yet if I could flip them the other way, would I ever have a YouTube channel? Would I ever talk to anybody? Would I ever pass anything on? Absolutely not. And so these things were all in line with God's design for who I am and God's design for bringing the best out of my life. That is truly not just embracing myself, but it's also embracing God, and realizing that he did not make a defective son. He made me how he saw fit, and it's for me to accept and embrace that as an offering that he gave me, and then to do the best I can with it.
