What do I do about anxious thoughts at night?
If we start to talk to our thoughts, most of the time we're going to be talking to demons. This is the writings of St Silouan the Athonite, when he says never talk to demons. And people think, oh, a demon is going to appear in my room and he's going to suggest all these things. No, no, no. It's the lying in bed at night, the anxiety, the worry, the thoughts that plague us, the uncertainties. What if this doesn't work out? What if this never happens? What if I never get X, Y and Z, then what? Or, this person sees me in this light, what does that say about me? It's a constant deflection. And when we get into those thoughts, it's the hallmark. We don't know where we are. We don't know what we're doing. And there's no answers, because for every question and every answer there's another question, another idea, another thought. And it's always pulling us away. This is why we don't trust in our thinking. We treat our thoughts with suspicion, especially when they're negative thoughts, anxious thoughts, depressive thoughts, thoughts that are causing us tumult. St Silouan once said, if we have a thought that disturbs us, we're free to leave it and find another thought. So many people hold on to these negative thoughts and it impacts their soul, and their soul becomes negative just from the thoughts. Nothing else. Nothing's even happening in reality. But the fear of what could happen in reality starts to bother the soul. It makes the soul uneasy and agitated and fearful.
