What does demonic influence actually look like day to day?

There is this peculiar interest with demons today in pop culture. What can they do? What does possession look like? The supernatural, all this stuff, in a kind of way that people are experiencing a morbid curiosity and almost an affection for seeing what the devil is doing. And of course, all this stuff is very showy and completely glazes over the majority of demonic influence that we see in society in everyday life, because fundamentally people don't understand that the demons are able to speak to us. They're able to encourage our thoughts or make suggestions. I often say that the demons, they hand us the handcuffs, but we have to put them on ourselves. They are the temptations, the ideas, the images that pop into our mind, what the holy fathers call intrusive thoughts, or logismoi. This idea is intrinsic to Christian writing. In fact, we read about it from the earliest manuscripts of people who struggled in the desert in Egypt who were early monastics, even before that. This idea that the devil is roaming around like a lion, as St Paul says, is fundamental to the Christian life. In fact, we see it in the Old Testament as well, all the way back to the garden. So what do we need to know about this, and how do we combat our demons, and why should we not try to argue with them? Well, demons are like playing 4D chess. That's the best analogy. They are the masters at understanding our proclivities, our psychologies, the nature of our existence and how we function as people. And of course they know our temptations, our pressure points, the areas that we give in to. There's that old saying, if you give the devil an inch, he'll become your ruler. Because the demons play on our history and who we are and how we are. But the demons are constantly sowing distrustful and negative and suspicious thoughts.
