What does it mean that we are made in God's image and likeness?

We often talk about the typology that the fathers speak about regarding image and likeness. What they mean by that is that God created man in his image, but he wants them to grow into his likeness. How do we understand that? Well, in very practical terms, we can think about when we have children, we produce children that look like us. They're actually in our image and they have similar attributes to us. Many times they inherit aspects of their personality or their temperament or these sort of things. The question is, as the child grows and matures, will they become in our likeness? Will they become like the parents in the good sense, if the parents are good, or will they begin to deviate and become something else altogether? So it is with God, that he has made us in his image, but we as humanity are to grow into his likeness. What does this mean? His humility, his love, his service, his responsibilities that he takes. All of these attributes of God are attributes of maturity, of not remaining like a child. Although everyone must have a season of life where they are a child, there comes a transition in their life where they must embrace adulthood. If we don't embrace adulthood, we are actually failing to embrace that which God has created us to become.
